When EarthQuaker Devices and drone-metal titans Sunn O))) first collaborated on the Life Pedal, they created one of the most coveted limited-run pedals of the era — a faithful distillation of the amp-melting rig Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson use to summon their tectonic walls of sound. Each limited version sold out instantly. The Sunn O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion + Booster finally makes that sound a permanent citizen of the EQD lineup, shrunk roughly fifty percent but conceding nothing sonically. The signal path is the same three-stage ritual: a blendable analog octave-up inspired by vintage Shin-Ei fuzz units, feeding a rodent-style distortion with a three-way clipping switch (op-amp, asymmetric silicon, or symmetric), capped by a MOSFET clean boost with its own footswitch for slamming your amp's front end into oblivion. The MAG, Clip and AMP controls — named in the band's cryptic style — govern distortion level, character and boost amount, while the octave blend lets you dial in anything from a faint harmonic shimmer to full ring-modulated chaos. It is obviously built for doom, sludge and drone players chasing maximum amplifier worship, but the HalfLife is sneakily versatile: octave down to zero and it is a superb RAT-family distortion; boost alone is a gorgeous MOSFET kick. A collaboration this deep between a band and a builder is rare — this one distills a genre into a box.
